BULLET-HIT SHEVCHENKO AND BANKSY ON THE RUINS

We were very honored to work on the project "Kyiv Region. Places of Memory" project together with Anna Kutsenko, who played an extremely important role, and with the team of the Kyiv Regional State Administration, with whom we had the honor of working on the project in Irpin and Moshchun before.

This object is one of those that are emotionally very difficult, but extremely important to create. Because only by remembering can we move forward and build our common future.

In the center of the town is a monument to Taras Shevchenko, who was shot by the occupiers. Nearby, there is a pavilion of murals on fragments of the walls of destroyed houses, which includes one of the most famous works by the British artist Banksy: a child gymnast performing a handstand on the rubble of a destroyed house.

Our team combined all the key elements into a single space of memory with light. Here, we used different types of lighting on a single pole with accent lighting for the monument and minimalist luminaires to illuminate the murals.  The play of light and shadow highlights the tragedy of this city. We added an oboe projection as a special feature and showed poetry with light - the poet's famous lines about invincibility, dignity and faith in victory.

This place has become a space that speaks the language of light and silence. The image of Kobzar is the image of every Ukrainian who is being broken, but who continues to dispel darkness and evil, because “Fight and you will overcome!”
